Twenty-six children at the Bennington Early Childhood Center were treated to a storytelling presentation from Marv Klassen-Landis through the Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF) on Tuesday July 28, 2015. In addition, each child was able to choose two brand-new books to keep!
CLiF awards Summer Readers grants to organizations in an effort to prevent “summer slide” in literacy skills. Research shows that children who do not read over summer vacation tend to lose literacy skills while children who do read improve their reading abilities. Thanks to this grant each child was able to leave the presentation with two books to take home and read with their families.
The mission of CLiF is to nurture a love of reading and writing among low income, at-risk, and rural children in New Hampshire and Vermont.
Over the past 17 years CLiF has inspired 170,000 young readers and writers through literacy program grants and has given away more than $3.5 million in new, high-quality children’s books.
